Every game has a hook, a strong point that draw people to it.

Baldur's Gate? IT's a game from DnD, use a wellknown location in DnD universe.  Fan of DnD flock to it.

Icewind Dale? It's Baldur's Gate game with pure combat. Baldur's Gate game fan flock to it. Fan of DnD flock to it too, but BG fan is the main players base.

Diablo? Nonstop dungeon crawling/combat with lots of loots (compared to other games of that year). The thing with customizable builds were only discovered by dedicated players, it's not a hook.

StarCraft? 3 seperate factions with 3 quite different strategy. (AoE and WarCraft is not too distinctive in their various factions).

So what's your hook?

To me, PARPG has two main hooks:
1. Unusual, fresh scenario (nuclear winter, Scandinavia)
2. Old school mechanics (turn-based combat, survival, detailed dialog trees with choice & consequence)

I reckon the gritty, brutal nature of the game is also a hook. Back to the days of Fallout 2, where you could shoot a child in the face if you felt like it, then go get laid and shoot Jet for the rest of the afternoon.

Oregon Trail meets Fallout with Jagged Alliance tactical combat!  And Vikings! What's not to like!
