I was doing this short research, trying to find games that are looking differently (but still they are looking, I've heard of sound-only games with one button interface)...

Disgaea: Afternoon of Darknes & Warsow - for "alternative shaders" in 3D, along with this fabulous work: http://www.pawfal.org/index.php?page=FluxusHardwareShaderLibrary
Another World - for 2D vectors (I wish cairo to be fast enough, and Inkscape having animation capabilities, and this two fitting togrther...  I would be very happy to do some 2D vector animations!)
Postal - for funny pixel-art style...
Nethack (roguelike) - ascii-art, but also tiles
Neverhood - for three trucks full of clay
Elite - for wireframe and solid vectors

Any other non-mainstream ideas?
