So at the meeting on 9/19 we decided that we would have a tech demo with 2 very simple "dialog/inventory" quests.  The quests are independent, but various "states" of them (particuarly) final results should interact.

These quests have no skills, stats, or challenges - their purpose is to demonstrate the basics of the game engine that are written:  Dialog, Inventory, Map loading.

Booze quest.

Overview:  PC meets an NPC, NPC complains that his town is "out of beer" and they are all depressed about it.  PC offers his expertise in brewing to make them some booze.  PC runs about town obtaining various ingredients.   Depending on what he makes the 'beer' out of will give a 'result'.

Equipment (mandatory)
- Pot
- Stove (or heating device)
- Bottles and Caps

Ingredients (mix and match)
- Yeast (medium hard to find) - optional
One of:
- Grain (hard to find)
- Wild Potatoes (easy to find)
- Rotten Yams (easy to find)
One of:
- Water, questionable (easy to find)
- Water, pure (hard to find)

You can make the beer without yeast  (using "wild yeast" or lambic) but it will be worse and take longer.
Grain is better than Potatoes is better than Rotten Yams.  Questionable water > pure water.  If you make "beer" out of rotten yams and bad water - you make everyone in the town sick.

Possible quest interaction:  "Fedex" quest is delivery of package to someone who turns out to be dead (down a well) - so, to get pure water, you have to get the body out of the well first!

So, if the water is in the well, we need 7 things to find or barter for.

Yams - you find these in a box, near the garbage pile.
Yeast - you have to talk to a crazy guy sucessfully to get this
Grain - talk to the farmer, he'll give it too you if you tell him it's for beer
Wild Potatoes - you dig these up.
Pot - you have to trade something you start with for this.  Maybe a pocket knife
Stove - you have to convince the innkeeper to let you use the stove

So - NPCs:
Drunkard - gives you quest
Crazy Guy - has the yeast
Farmer - has the grain
Innkeeper - has the pot and stove.

Locations:
Inn (can be kind of shanty-like, but has some kind of stove)
Shack (where the crazy guy lives)
Little Farm (where the farmer is)
Garbage pile (where the yams are)
Well (where the water is)
Garden (where the wild potatoes are)

Well, that's a start.  Any other thoughts?

Looks nice so far, I havent thought about everything (to be honest, I had trouble finding the thread here)

One question i have, since you wrote in the FEDEX quest that one NPC could be related to the booze-quest too, will that NPC from the FEDEX quest be one of the NPCs you mentioned here too?

Drunkard - gives you quest
Crazy Guy - has the yeast
Farmer - has the grain
Innkeeper - has the pot and stove.

Also we should get meinmartini to have a look at the thread here too, perhaps he didn't see it yet

I think we should have some overlap in the NPCs for the two quests, but not a perfect overlap.
Like the 2 main folks in the NPC quest (guy who gives you the quest and the dead guy you deliver to) should be different

I had a brainstorm while I was grocery shopping.

http://wiki.parpg.net/Draft:Techdemo_Quests

This wiki page superceeds my thoughts above; I think we can make some trivial alterations to fit the new location.

Another thing, we should try to get portraits of all the NPCs that will be available.
On IRC justinoperable made a solid remark - the quality of portraits should be rather
high (in general). Why? Because, as it was similar with the game Wesnoth, good
artists attract other artists. (Plus we can "reuse" the NPCs in the demoquests
in the "real" game lateron as well).

So we have at least 2 main NPCs right? How many more would we want to
feature with portraits for the techdemo 2009?

Also I had a look at the wiki. Nice map! Do we need some specific buildings
we dont yet have? Haven't seen a watchtower or any real kind of a tower so
far but I think modellers might really go forward and do something, and the rest
of the story for the quests could easily incorporate that (unless it would be
exotic and not fitting to the game theme, like a faerie tower ...)

About the guard at the front gate, I think we would need a portrait for him?
I.e. the player could talk a bit with him... "Someone got to do the job here.
We dont want any thieves sneak in and get anywhere close to loot our storage rooms."

What buildings will we need? For example, guess we need piles of wood or? I will be
trying to find people who like wood hehe...

BTW have a look at the items justinoperable created (and the portrait of the drunkard)

we will need a dilapidated mini-mall that's converted to something resembling a stronghold.
Oh, I will take this to graphics.

I am going to finalize the characters and items today and tomorrow.  I guess I would also like to have about 10 "donothing" NPCs as well (they have no scripted dialog that's not generic, are just scenery)

But that's a last thing item if we have time.

Yeah, just trying to see which things we will need to get the techdemo in time. Perhaps if the quests allow for several ways and showcase how to continue it'll attract more people lateron. Sometimes contributers feel demotivated if they *feel* that for a long time nothing happens.
