I gave that up in high school because it was trite.  Although it does have a re-donkulous rule book.

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/4258 better with a shorter ruleset.

My personal favorites can be found here:

You can combine Guderian's Blitzkreig II and Case Blue.  If you have 9' x 9' table, and 10,000 hours.

Trite? Was an excellent game, as long as you had 5 players who knew what they were doing (a tall order, given the rulebook). But back in my university days it was possible, and also you could just about run a good game over 2 long evenings  Grin

Unfortunately, nowadays I have things like a wife and a job that get in the way. But I'll definitely be teaching my son Squad Leader when he gets older!

In time order let me count the outstanding ones:

Impossible Mission
Last Ninja
Wizard of War
Dune 2
Civilization 1
Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis
Dune 1
Wizardry 7
Wizardry 8
Civ 2
FO 1
Gothic 1
Gothic 3

These were good and i remember them. Now which had greatest impact on me? Those that represented the given genre for me the first time I was able to receive the genre correctly and love it!

Wizardry 7
Dune 2
Civ 1
(and I would expand the 5 to 6 to give the action genre some place: Last Ninja)

The later ones are mostly derivatives of the old ones for me - that's one of the reasons why I play really little nowadays. I hunt for unique gameplay or stories mostly.

And of course there are a few lot of classic I didn't have the time yet to play (like Baldur's Gate 2)

That's it!
