This is hardly thread worthy - but it's simple enough.  Mechanics for exploding stuff is pretty simple.  If you are next to it, you are dead.  If you are close it it, 50% dead, 50% K/O.  If you are not so close, you are deafened and stunned and possibly wounded.

As to whether we need them - that is up to writers/level designers.

Presumably we'll need exploding/shrapnel mechanics for grenades anyway.

It shouldn't be hard to extend that to barrels, landmines, or whatever if needed.
