From todays' IRC
Lamoot>do we want exploding barrels in parpg?
barra_library>hmm not really sure about it
barra_library>we got a somewhat realistic setting
barra_library>are there any exploring barrels in the world outside of Hollywood movies?
Lamoot>red alert 1 and 2 Smiley
barra_library>sure they look cool but it might be something like exploding cars: cool, but not realistic
Lamoot>but that's hollywood Smiley
Lamoot>no I mean as a combat mechanics
barra_library>yep, I would say no from a realism point of view
Lamoot>though who knows how many barrels would there be after 20 years
barra_library>but I would leave the decision to zenbitz who surely already thought about it :-)
Lamoot>and whether the effort is worth for the small amount of them that is left
Lamoot>but then again, you can have a stash of gunpowder
Lamoot>or a barrel of ethanol

This is hardly thread worthy - but it's simple enough.  Mechanics for exploding stuff is pretty simple.  If you are next to it, you are dead.  If you are close it it, 50% dead, 50% K/O.  If you are not so close, you are deafened and stunned and possibly wounded.

As to whether we need them - that is up to writers/level designers.

We are not denying them an ending...

Presumably we'll need exploding/shrapnel mechanics for grenades anyway.

It shouldn't be hard to extend that to barrels, landmines, or whatever if needed.
