thanks for the links maximinus, but none of these seem usable right away because of terms of use
Aw shucks. I also build maps for 3D shooters so I just filled in what was in my bookmarks page, like I say I didn't check the license. Good work on the research, sorry that it came up empty handed!

I want to point out that TraK has made some neato texture sets that are ccbysa/gpl licensed. http://trak.mercenariesguild.net/node/3I talked to him on irc (I wanted to know if I could use more modern versions of the licenses for being able to add them to opengameart.org) and he said yes. If you like to hear more than my word (i'll take no offense!) I'll ask him to make this info public on his page (write that all the ccbysa/gpl stuff can use the version 3 of these licenses.

But you could basically tile them when you use a larger image and then cut it up into smaller ones. Though, one large texture should then correspond to a whole map area (or most of it)

Nice find by MaximB: http://free3dstextures.com/They're all licensed under Creative Commons. You still need to check on a case by case basis if commercial usage as well as remixing (= modifying) them is allowed though.

On http://wiki.parpg.net/Graphics:Tools we have a nice collection. I think that, one day, we should also tell artists what is the preferred way to use.. or more specifically, what formats we prefer. Right now it is not important but I figured it might simplify the life of new visitors slightly

Sindwiller just pointed us to http://www.burningwell.org/gallery2/v/textures/ today. Burningwell has been mentioned here in the past but I just wanted to emphasize that a bunch of nice textures can be found there.

Nice link warbringerd. Caution: the mayang textures are not CC 3.0 BY-SA compatible either, at least we would have to modify them quite a bit before we could release them under CC 3.0 BY-SA as the license section of the websites states: You cannot use the textures for anything that directly competes with us. This includes, putting the textures on your own website, selling them, or giving them away. This restriction includes the textures themselves, as well as any minor modifications, for example, you may not make our texture seamless or tileable and then sell them. But as said: artists should simply document what textures sources they've used for their PARPG models. We can simply ship the first release with some non CC 3.0 BY-SA assets but they need to be clearly documented. Hopefully we can replace these assets with totally "free" versions (read: released under CC 3.0 BY-SA) with the help of the community sooner or later.
