I discovered FOSS games about 5 years ago through Battle for Wesnoth, and contributed a heavily over the next few years.
Since then i've also contributed to about a dozen projects to varying degrees.

I've been involved in these areas:
    2D graphic creation
    GUI / user interface
    Game mechanics
    Backstory / Gameworld Design

I continue to contribute to the FreeOrion project, in a lot of areas.

In real life i generally work as a graphic designer with a dash of illustrator.   Photoshop is my weapon of choice.

A not-very-well maintained gallery of some of my work is here

On the internet i also go by the name of "eleazar" or "jwbjerk"

EDIT: added gallery link

Heya eleazzaar :-)

Haven't been aware of FreeOrion until yet, thanks for the pointer.
* mvBarracuda checks out the FreeOrion wiki

EDIT: I'm actually surprised that SMF supports the /me syntax.

Funny, I actually know Alan Emrich - designer and lead writer for MOO III, and also wrote the original MOO strategy guide.
He teaches computer game design at the Art Institute of California....

I believe some of the original FreeOrion devs talked with alan about what worked and what didn't in MoO3 and about some of the ideas for FreeOrion.

Unfortunately MoO3 is in many ways an object lesson in a game design process gone wrong.

i probably should have explained though i do have an art background, and probably will comment on that area and occasionally contribute, i don't have 3D skills (and i don't even want them), beyond some texturing experience.

But in the area of GUI design, you couldn't keep my away if you tried.

Ah, we have 3d artists and texturers interested, but no GUI only artists until now. Sounds nice Smiley

Do you perhaps have any examples of your work?

If you can get it to run there's the silver tree character portrait bar at the bottom of the screen is IMHO a very nice piece of work (coded by our own icelus).  What makes it cool is how it functions, though not just how it looks on screen.  The rest of silver tree GUI didn't get very polished.

There's some old stuff in Wesnoth and a lot of newer stuff in FreeOrion.  FreeOrion is very much a work in progress, and i'm somewhat out of touch with Wesnoth so it will take some digging to present working examples and concepts in a way that's not confusing.  So i'll try to get to that.

I think one of my improvements made it into UFO:AI too, though everyone was against the idea when i was still around.

EDIT: for game projects i've always gone by "eleazar" or "eleazzaar", you are free to search, but a quick try didn't bring relevant results to the top.

Nice to meet you! I'm going to be collaborating with you on the game script and I look forward to working with you. Just out of curiosity, do you work as a graphic designer for a video game company or studio?

Thanks,
welcome aboard.

No, i don't work of a game studio.  I used to think i wanted to, but then i learned that that industry is rather high pressure, high stress.  I don't want to live at that pace.  My design work has pretty much all been for books of one kind of another.  Game-making and GUI-design is so far just a hobby, if a hobby i take seriously.

Added a gallery link to the top post.

I'm back from vacation, but caught a nasty virus.  May be away for another week or so.

Keep up the good work.
