16  Development / Audio / Main theme/Menu theme: A Formal Design on: November 11, 2009, 08:10:15 PM
This is a thread I encourage all of our team to participate in. Mostly because this theme is what gamers are going to hear every time they start PARPG. I know we're gunning for an electronica/ambient style of soundtrack, but I'm curious to see if anybody is open to other forms and genres. Could we include possibly some traditional, orchestral theme to make this seem like an emotionally-charged game? Or could this conflict too much with the soundtrack as a whole?

Possible themes:

  • Hopeful - Do we want something that, while not necessarily 'light-hearted' still gives off the impression that - in no better term - there is still hope?
  • Dark - Or, do we prefer something that will really bring out the despair and seriousness of the world the characters live in?
  • Hybrid - We could even implement having more than one possible theme present, depending which is preferred to be the central focus

How would we go about exploring this theme? What types of sounds would you like to hear within them?

Again, these are just some suggestions; don't take them as these are the only two options being considered. Feel free to leave your own ideas.

Would a separate topic on the main theme/menu theme be appropriate? That way we can discuss what we want vs. what we really don't.

A lot of PC games have folders where you can insert music you'd like to hear in-game. Of course, it all depends on the format. Some programs use MP3s; easy enough to drag and drop the music you want. But if it's in another format (we're using OGG), gamers would have to go the distance to convert the tunes they want to hear.

Or we can implement an importer and gamers can just point and click what they want.

Would some of these areas share the same music? What about the main menu?

If we insert every piece written thus far, demos and samples included, that gives us 4 tracks. Exactly how many maps are going to be used in this tech demo?

There's already a topic about this (which is now a sticky!) Check it out.

No, I know him personally; we went to the same high school.

Hey, guys. I recall reading that the project needs more concept artists. For what types of things exactly are in need? Environments? Weapons? Monsters? I know of someone who may be able to participate somewhat if he's interested.

Here's some of his work. He doesn't really update this site as regularly as his blog, but here you can consistently see his style:

It'll be way easier to spread the word once we can get a teaser video online. Smiley  I think we should spread the word, though.
A PARPG channel on YouTube sounds like a great idea for somebody who wants to keep up with it. What about a Twitter account? We should try to take as much advantage of social networking as possible.

At one point I had asked if I was the only person representing the Audio team. That's all.

I wasn't sad...

Some of us are in the IRC room now...very small amount of us. Hope people didn't forget!

In all seriousness, that was the only bass sound that I could find to match the sound that I wanted: growing and receding dynamics. Of course, I could have achieved that by using cello and double bass instruments, but I didn't want to score for those.

Try it in-game and see if it fits (within the proper environment). If it sounds completely and totally out of whack, I'll try a more "traditional" synth for the bass.

I imagine that it's going to be next weekend, then. We really ought to decide on a date and time so that we can plan schedules accordingly.

I'm fully available for both weekends.
