I started to get some freetime from school this week, and decided to get myself on the map of the Parpg development so far.I thought that single design document would do the trick and this is the result so far: http://docs.google.com/Doc?docid=0Ac5s9sL3BJr3ZGZwemhkczZfNjlkNW52dDlmMw&hl=en

The workflow between wiki, forum, trac and irc is hard for me to follow since I haven't been able to actively paricipate in the development and that was the main reason why I started to collect the design document for myself.

I don't remember where I got the template for the design document, so if somebody remembers seeing it somewhere please let me know. I would like to know what the copyright was on it.

Unactive developer here, so I'm not exactly on the map on what should be in the techdemo, but I can atleast tell that the installing and running the game works good.
4  Development / Writing and Quests / Re: Names of NPCs and the Wiki on: February 03, 2010, 09:08:38 AM
if you read the thread which has his story and characters in it, he asks us not to use his characters.

Sorry, what I actually meant was that IF you will write different storyline and personalities for the characters then please rename them(or ask me or some other finnish speaker to give them names) so that people (mainly I) wouldn't get confused associations between the older and newer characters. Since there hasn't really been any complete do-overs on the characters I don't mind at all if the few names that I gave would be used.

A little late info: I haven't been able to do much work for parpg, mainly because my number one consern has been swedish language and its grammatical quirks that defy all logic.

My quest for swedish mastery will continue few more months and I'll be back after this workload is off from my metaphorical shoulders. In a sense, my original objective of doing some work on the quests for techdemo 1 will be unfinnished until later notice.

A little sidenote from me about the amount of snow:

The snow during autumn and spring looks somewhat like that. It's wet, and because of that it "lumps" into different sized chunks when it all starts to melt. And because of this, it makes it look like the season in our techdemo will be the growing period.
7  Development / Writing and Quests / Re: Dialogue Proposal on: December 02, 2009, 06:22:20 PM
I would like to try it. It's much like how I try to come up with the dialogue, but I don't need to change roles all the time.
And besides, live role-playing is fun.

The roads will be cracked slightly.

The roads will be in horrible shape. Water goes into cracks in the asphalt and pushes the edges of the cracks when it turns to ice.

Atleast here it's a hurdle to keep redoing parts of the roads every year after winter.

What would happen to person when his home is utterly destroyed? Rather interesting question, no?

What would the nationalromantic soldier do? He believes that Finland is defeated only when every single finn has been killed. Would he try to come up with a plan to defend the post he stands on, just to slowly realise that the "enemy" too is completely obliterated? What if there would be a metropolitan realist and communist with him? What if they would start a radio show to reach out to what remains of the past nations, just to end up arguing about their philosophical differences live on ether?

Anyway, when I wrote "home" I meant "homeland". As I explained earlier, the mentality was "we vs. them", since Finland doesn't have anything that resembles the american concept of "out in the field". If Finland would have waged war, it would have been inside Finland against an attack.

I'm sorry if I made it sound like it, but it's not about good or bad, it's about characteristics and the logical things a human would do, based on those characteristics. Finnish society as a whole is extremely patriotic and nationalistic. Conscript soldiers wouldn't start to raid their own homes. What would be the point of doing so? It's directly opposite of the logic behind conscript armies.
If you are stationed infront of your own house, you are far more likely to fight to death protecting it opposed to abandoning your post.

Edit. Ofcourse, this doesn't mean that nobody would become a raider if the opportunity would arise. What I mean is that it defies logic to go from protecting your home to raiding it, just because nobody is giving the order to protect it anymore.

About the the the army left-over soldiers:

As far as I know, if Finland would have waged a war with someone before the nuclear destruction, the soldiers wouldn't have become raiders. Finland had, and still has, a concsript army and it would have been higly unlikely that higly nationalistic mentality, "we the finns vs.  the enemies", would soon be replaced with "we the ex-soldiers against everyone else". Finland was, and at times still is, extremely homogenous society on every imaginable level, and especially older people have this incedible romantic and patriotic image of finnish soldier, who picks a fight against 20 enemy soldiers together with his combat partner and triumphs with the sheer force of iron will.

I'm not so familiar with the morale and mentality of Soviet army of the time but if I would make a wild guess, the soldiers of the Red army wouldn't either become pillaging hordes of antagonists.
But again, I'm  not familiar with the cultural history of Soviet Union.

I cannot say anything about the other countries soldiers.

Just a sidenote from me.

I'm researching the most realistic scenario that could have happened in the 80s that would make it possible for us to have only 1-5% of the population left alive. And at the moment it seems to be extremely easy to brush it as a global nuclear holocaust.
There is quite alot of information about Finlands preparations for war during the cold war, and this info includes the different kind of civilian security plans during a possible nuclear attack.

Also, making a fire during winter isn't exactly a rocketscience. It's possible with extremely primitive tools. I've seen a small girl do a fire during winter with a little learning first.

To be honest, I don't think I can write all the dialog for my version of the quest all by myself, so I think that Zenbits quest has more of a chance to make it.

The characters motivation and persona are completely different, and using any of my character designs would render the story unbelievable. So, Who will create the new character designs?

One more thing, and this is mostly my problem, but I have been thinking about the character designs so long now that the names instantly register emotionally as these characters that I have designed. Thus while I read tru the Zenbits quest I just kept thinking that "No, he couldn't do that!", "That's unbeliavable..." etc. So I would like to ask if we could use the original placeholder names instead the new ones, since it would give me some more room to adjust to the new characteristics.
14  Development / Writing and Quests / Re: Religion on: November 04, 2009, 06:04:54 PM
I personally don't like cults of any kind. There has been too many cults for me to get any real enjoyment from realising that the game or movie has a "secret" cult of any kind.

Never winter nights: Old ones and their idiotic followers,
Fallout: Master and his merry men,
Fahrenheit: (btw, if you haven't played these yet, don't read) Flying Oracle and his alien buddies,
Silent Hill: The cult,
ES oblivion: CAE, Cult against emporer,
The Kali cult in that one Indiana Jones film,
etc...

To hell with cults.

but how about it if the previous beer-maker just died, of old age or pneumonia or whatever. You could go through his notes and use his equipment to set up something bigger rather than just a one-off distillery

That's a good idea. The hook is simple, subtle and there is a freedom to make it into anykind of story without much of a problem.
