Title: News update thread
Post by: mvBarracuda on May 04, 2009, 02:01:01 PM
For the ones who don't regularly check the blog: I'll post in this thread whenever our blog gets updated.

Let's start today: http://blog.parpg.net/2009/05/crates-we-need-crates/

Sorry, no news update coming today :-/ I've been busy with my presentation and therefore didn't have the time to update the news yet. I'll have a free day at Thurday and will try to bring the news to you then.

Next news update after that won't be released before Friday, 29th of May; this is the day of my presentation at university. I'll either update at Monday, 1st of June or maybe already at Saturday, 30th of May. Thanks for your understanding.

Sorry for yet another delay :-( It was a rather dumb idea to think that I could write the news update _after_ getting drunk with my mates last Thursday; it was men's / father's day here in Germany.

I'll be busy with my presentation until Friday but you can expect to see a _massive_ news update at Saturday. Apologies again for all the delays.

I showed the video to a friend of mine, and she thought it was the final product. I had to convince her that it's just a sample of the engine in development, haha.  ;D

I was once a database programmer for a small company (SQL integration with a GUI front-end, these were the days before the web). We knocked up a demo of a project (it had all the buttons and sliders etc...) linked with some dummy data to show a client, unfortunatly the client decided we would be too slow since he could see that we actually had a finished product, so why would it take 2 months to build the rest (i.e, the entire damn back end and logic??).

Now I'm on a roll.... I was explaining my job to somebody once, when we at my computer. Since he seemed to grasp the concept quite well, I showed him a slice of C code I had been working on at the time. His eyes went straight to the comments of my code - and he then exclaimed how easy it must be to do this. YOU JUST TELL THE COMPUTER IN PLAIN ENGLISH!! No amount of further conversation could convince him of the truth, and so he always thought I had the easiest job in the world.

lol

that's a pretty hilarious story. Well, actually both are. But the first one makes me a bit sad, because a client assumes that "it is so easy to create it, why spend two months with it".

The second story is however really great. Using plain english would be pretty cool - "comments is data is code" :D

It was a 2d board game written in Python, so I probably had comments like

# work out shortest path to enemy and move along that path
# update the map and draw mini map
# save game and inform player

Grr that encounter made me a little mad because he took the piss all night!!!  >:(  Thought he was genius as well, since he 'worked out my secret' so fast!

Last news update from my side until I'm back from my break:
http://blog.parpg.net/2010/02/you-just-havent-earned-it-yet-baby/

I didn't manage to spread the news about the updates at the forums where we usually advertize PARPG. There are two options:
1. Simply don't spread the word about this specific update
2. Somebody else spreads the word about it by registering at (some of) these websites: http://wiki.parpg.net/Spreading_the_word
