Title: Favourite games?
Post by: maximinus on April 04, 2009, 02:59:20 PM
We got an off-topic section!!!

Quickly, and not in any particular order, what are the five best computer or console games you have ever played?

For me:

  • Deus Ex
  • Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
  • Sid Meirs's Alpha Centauri
  • Baldurs Gate 2
  • ICO

Oh man, 5 is *way hard*!!!

That's hard!

Microprose's Pirates!  (the original)
Alpha Centari
Deus Ex
Riven
Knights of the Old Republic
Civ IV

Yeah i know that's 6. :P

Didn't' include Baldur's Gate 2 because i played it first when it was pretty old, and the aging, and annoying UI and the excessively complex D&D rules make it too hard to really get into.  I've gotten as far as the underdark, on my second play-through but never beat it.

Fallout is maybe in my top 10 or 12.

No RPGs on this list as I've already posted my favourite RPGs before. Basically a list of favourite PC games of all time without RPGs:

Age of Empires 2
Battlefield 1942
Civilization 2
Half-Life 1
No one lives forever 1

That's hard!

But quite amazing that we managed to pick 2 the same! I was highly tempted to go with Civ 2, as I spent an insane amount of time with it, but Alpha Centauri was the better game.

Also, considering I've been gaming for 28 years, it's maybe surprising that some older ones didn't get. Maybe Dungeon Master for the Atari ST or Mercenary for the ZX Spectrum.... they were killer games at time.

GTA: San Andreas impressed me even more last year because it turned out to still be better than GTA: IV. Still the best sandbox game ever, IMHO.

1. Half-Life / Counterstrike
2. Fallout 1/2
3. Castle Wolfenstein (2d original, 3d, return)
4. civ1/civ2/civIII.

Nothing else really stands out... I liked MOA:AA, but not enough to actually finish it.

I am not sure it's a favorite... but I just d/l'd  "The Oregon Train" for my Blackberry... I will use it to influence PARPG design.  Also, I can use the blackberry as a modem for my laptop, which well keep more connected with the project during my commute.

Yay me!

4. civ1/civ2/civIII.

Have you played civ IV?  I have a hard time imagining someone considering it inferior to all 3 previous civs.

I can - I've played too much Civ in the past so I really need something very new to fire the enthusiasm. I'm not saying Civ 4 is not better than previous Civ's, it's just that played those previous Civ's a little too much.

I like Civ4 more than Civ3 definitely.

Civ1 - is a classic, though.

I gave that up in high school because it was trite.  Although it does have a re-donkulous rule book.

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/4258 (http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/4258) better with a shorter ruleset.

My personal favorites can be found here:

You can combine Guderian's Blitzkreig II and Case Blue.  If you have 9' x 9' table, and 10,000 hours.

Trite? Was an excellent game, as long as you had 5 players who knew what they were doing (a tall order, given the rulebook). But back in my university days it was possible, and also you could just about run a good game over 2 long evenings  ;D

Unfortunately, nowadays I have things like a wife and a job that get in the way. But I'll definitely be teaching my son Squad Leader when he gets older!

In time order let me count the outstanding ones:

Impossible Mission
Last Ninja
Pirates!
Wizard of War
Dune 2
Civilization 1
Frontier
Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis
Dune 1
Wizardry 7
Wizardry 8
Civ 2
FO 1
NWN1
Gothic 1
Gothic 3

These were good and i remember them. Now which had greatest impact on me? Those that represented the given genre for me the first time I was able to receive the genre correctly and love it!

Wizardry 7
Dune 2
Civ 1
Pirates!
Frontier
(and I would expand the 5 to 6 to give the action genre some place: Last Ninja)

The later ones are mostly derivatives of the old ones for me - that's one of the reasons why I play really little nowadays. I hunt for unique gameplay or stories mostly.

And of course there are a few lot of classic I didn't have the time yet to play (like Baldur's Gate 2)

That's it!
