Title: Name of game
Post by: zenbitz on February 13, 2009, 08:17:51 PM
maybe it's early... but I don't think we can go with PARPG.  Given "snow" world here are a couple shots in the dark:
Caveat, I have not bothered to google these to see if any game already exists with the name...

- Sublime
- A Long December
- (keeping with rock theme...) Cold Hard Bitch
- Snow Blind
- A Boy and his Dog (Sled)

I think it's a bit early indeed. Maybe we should wait until setting, story and mechanics have been further fleshed out? My proposal was to reconsider the name once we're working on the actual one town / location demo:

I suggest to use parpg as long as there is no 1.0 release :)

Hmm... it's just outside of Trondheim, which is ~100km north of our map.

Nuclear Winter

Winter

After the bang

Cold

I think that the name shouldnt be too long or complicated, i would
prefer something short that relates to the game or just something that doesnt mean anything.

The Morning After  (this one I'm trying to think of some way of sticking PILL on the end but subtley.. haven't got there... *yet*)

Down Wind  (not sure why but this just seemed fitting and a nice name... perhap it could be the settlement our pc is from)

Are there (snow) angels in heaven? (this would make a great subtitle I think)

I propose:

Vemhån

http://maps.google.se/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=62.312623,14.03821&daddr=&hl=sv&geocode=&mra=mi&mrsp=0&sz=14&sll=62.312423,14.042845&sspn=0.029712,0.087118&ie=UTF8&z=14

I clicked on a map of Sweden randomly (the less populated bit). Our adventurer could just be a man from Vemhån; that's all we know about him/her at the start. The plot could fill in the details as it developed. It's minimal, and it gives a sensible starting location.

Not bad, but I think it's too melodramatic. "Afterfall" is much better a title IMHO.

On IRC I came up with "Cold"

The key multiple meaning was that icelus and I were talking about the planned practice of using Dogs to pull your sled of stores on a long journey, then eating the dogs when your stores ran out because you won't need dogs to pull and empty sled.

Oh, and also from IRC:

ICELUST

If we put together some cool mechanics that work with the temperature angle, i think "Cold" would work well.

But for the time being we should stick with paRPG.

Personally i'm really glad the name doesn't contain "tux" or "free", that always struck me as very generic.

And the winner is....  (and yes, I do like to declare victory prematurely...)

WHITE OUT

This is a triple pun.
1) obv. fall OUT reference
2) White out weather : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whiteout_(weather)
and finally (drum roll please)
.
.
.
3) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wite-Out
This is a VERY common american engish expression when you need to "erase" something, like  in our case (metaphorically) history...

The only downside is that there is a snowboarding game called Whiteout XL ,b ut I doubt that confuses anyone.

I like white out but it keeps reminding me of wipe out. Barren something might work. Whatever it is, we need a name. PARPG ain't the most catchy  :-\

Title: Re: Name of game
Post by: zenbitz on June 18, 2009, 06:17:38 PM
If we go with Barren we would have to put in a major fertility plot... which is ... meh.
If we go with Barren X there are probably a dozen games named like that.

I still like White Out the best... but I am sucker for the triple pun.

Title: Re: Name of game
Post by: mvBarracuda on June 18, 2009, 07:33:06 PM
As we don't have a really fleshed out story concept at this point, we should simply stick to bringing up more suggestions but don't force a final decision early. We should really have a good idea what the game will be about before agreeing upon a name.

Title: Re: Name of game
Post by: tZee on June 18, 2009, 09:20:24 PM
actually I think it's fine to agree on any name that is related to the PA setting and use it as a working title. the final title should be decided when we worked out the story.

Title: Re: Name of game
Post by: Dave Matney on June 18, 2009, 10:02:29 PM
As far as I was aware, PARPG IS the working title.

I might be biased in this regard but for me personally PARPG is fine as working title.

I think PARPG as name is nice enough. Especially when I read some alternatives like "Absolute Zero"

How about this - "PARPG" could stay as main "title", and the title for the "current main game" has some kind of tagline like... i dont know, for example:

PARPG
  The Awakening

(or The Beginning)

I think keeping PARPG as identifier would be nice.

tbh.. PARPG is more of the subtitle..

Fallout - A postapocalyptic roleplaying game
 (or something)

it says on the cover.

But for now PARPG is good enough as a working title, conveying information as to what are about. It'll attract the right sort for "now" when they see the "rpg" identifier.

PARPG as a working title works, since it could draw in a larger crowd, instead of narrowing it down a little bit more. In the least, we could get different types of ideas from many other angles.

If for sure you're going with a snow nuclear winter theme, how about 'Hot Winter'?

Hot in terms of radiation, nuclear blast heat, a reverse-play on the cold War theme, etc.

It's short, concise, and tells you what the game is about in 2 words.

Title: Re: Name of game
Post by: tZee on July 01, 2009, 10:39:12 AM
Actually I came to think that changing the working title now would be pretty stupid, given that we have been advertising for this project using the name PARPG, having the domain etc.

Later, when the story is sorted out, it makes sense to decided on the final title, but for now we should stick with PARPG.

Title: Re: Name of game
Post by: mvBarracuda on July 01, 2009, 05:07:43 PM
Yep, that was my main concern as well tZee. Once we've a really solid idea of the main storyline, I'm perfectly fine with adopting a new name for the project but IMO we should wait until that happens.
