Title: The Concept Art and Ideas Thread
Post by: icelus on March 17, 2009, 02:44:21 PM
Quote from: icelus
Original post: I can't draw, but I thought I might start a thread of ideas for concept art for PARPG (since I read in the logs we might have some soon).

- A snow globe with a ruined city inside, against a black background (fragility of earth, nuclear winter, etc).

Just an idea.
edit:

ATTENTION: Post all your thoughts, scribbles and ideas for the artists here, also any concept art you don't think deserves a thread of its own - Gaspard

or even better against a modern background maybe, like a pavement, so the inversion is the broken city inside the normal world, just like the game is... maybe trying to be too clever.

Nah, not trying to be too clever, sounds cool ;)

I PMed Gaspard my ideas about the concept art, but I can't seem to access sent PMs.. weird.

Yes, that would be appreciated, so we have more contributions to the ideas thread :)

Thank you.

Today most concept art or box covers show people, faces and are really action-packed. They don't capture a great ambient though (imo).

In ye olde days, Box art seemed more artistic and came in many forms and flavours. For example this Dune 2 box art

It's really simple, but tells you everything about the game and the world. You have a desert, you have blue sky and some stuff burning with a thick black smoke in the distance. Nothing else needed - all is said.

Of course you have your artistic freedom, so don't feel constrained by my proposals Smiley

Also here are two tracks that might put you into the post-apoc mood Smiley

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AV83ggqPML0

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-eFmPnFDit8

All in all a mix of mad max 2, dune 2 and a snowy landscape would be ideal?

Whoa, it's been two weeks already since that last post. Sadly I can't show you guys any moodshots yet. Schoolwork has been keeping me on my toes and doing any personal painting has been absolutely out of the question. Haven't had time to really keep up with what's going on the forums either.

All that does not mean that PARPG has been out of my thoughts, though. I still keep doing thumbnails and I'm constantly composing something in my head.

Usually, when trying to get into a theme I try to imagine what kind of people or characters would inhabit the place. So I do sketches and drawings of them. To prove that I'm not yet dead and gone from the forums I compiled some of these into a .. a chunk of a picture:

SNOWBALLS !? THE LAST RESORT !

Wow! Looks great to me. I can't tell you how much inspiration I as a coder get from a bunch of graphic art, as I think it's the hardest part of the game - I can write a little, play music and code but my artwork sucks!

Hey Gaspard, great concept art! You really have some drawing skills. Should make for a cool promotional image at barra's blog :) and is also very motivational :)

We understand real life can get in the way (and is actually a priority) when it comes to hobby projects and we at the P.A.R.P.G. Corporation&Sons ltd. respect that ;)

Title: Re: Concept art
Post by: Gaspard on April 10, 2009, 12:33:34 AM
bleh. lots of schoolwork  :(

anyways while working on the thumbnails for a moodshot I kept thinking of this action scene... so today I couldn't help myself and started drawing it. idea was more like man(BOOM-survivor) vs feral beast, but so far has turned out like bum(note the pink earmuffs) vs hungry dog  >:(

EDIT: replaced with newer one in next post

good night guys I'll gladly pass out now

Nobody's responded yet and I know that can be a killer for motivation, so I thought I'd chip in my 2c. I think the artwork is pretty good; I love the slightly ragged and desperate look of the character.

As you can see I'm no art critic, but keep up the good work!

Just to know: is anybody working/modelling anything based upon these concepts? I'll be able to start something in a couple of weeks. Maybe even less if I'm to simply model.. See you.

Edit
We'll need a few normal animals too, I guess..

Title: Re: Concept art

Hey everyone. I was approached a while back about doing some concept work. Here's a small token of my continued interest as I have been terribly busy of late. I should be able to devote more time to foss art stuff. So lemme know if you guys like it and if I should knock out some more. These are just quick sketches that I made to start feeling out winter post apocalyptic gear.

Title: Re: Concept art
Post by: Sirren on April 23, 2009, 09:41:12 AM

Hello JustinOperable, and welcome on board.
I like it, and expecially the female character. More, please.

Title: Re: Concept art
Post by: maximinus on April 23, 2009, 10:22:42 AM
Yeh, looks good to me! more of this please, especially if you can clean it up for the computer (i.e. add colour etc...)

Title: Re: Concept art
Post by: JustinOperable on April 23, 2009, 07:21:29 PM
Here's a quick coloration of the female. Hope you guys like it.

Edit: I've added some quick silhouettes of raiders. Basically, the idea behind silhouettes is to work out a number of different gestures, shapes and to help me get a feel for the shape design of the characters. Let me know which ones you guys like and I can flesh them out into drawings.

Title: Re: Concept art
Post by: Sirren on April 23, 2009, 09:40:25 PM
A) The female character: I like it more and more... Usually when modelling we use a front and a side orthographics shots for reference. This is not mandatory though. Human reference to model upon can be acquired through various means. In short: if you're low on time your sketch is good enough. We simply need someone to say: "Mine!".
B) Your silohuettes: Err.. I'd say I like all of them except for the second from the left. Only one remark: keep in mind that in game most of the time the average temperature will be around -20/-40 degrees. Characters aren't going to look too slim.
Keep up the good work.

Title: Re: Concept art
Post by: JustinOperable on April 23, 2009, 10:38:09 PM
I would be willing to do a turnaround for any character that developers want to model for inclusion in the game, but I was just sketching so wasn't too worried about the forms being perfect. I'm more just trying to fish out the style of the characters. I'll do sketches of the silhouettes you liked and post them when I'm done. If you guys end up wanting the female character to be redrawn for modeling, I can do that, just let me know.

Edit: I did some quick sketches over a few of the silhouettes. They're real rough. The form is not terribly strong but they get the point across. Let me know what you think. The first one is sort of a generic raider, the second I sort of envision as tribal raider chieftain, drawing up images of the horned man of the forest. The third is a female raider, her costuming isn't entirely established, but I'm think she has sashes or a tutu with a mongolian looking tops with those fur protrusions. Let me know what you like and don't like and what I can do.

Title: Re: Concept art
Post by: maximinus on April 24, 2009, 04:12:59 AM
Your artwork is good. Maybe the head of the girl in the last picture is a little small but that's just a small nit-pick (like you say they are a bit rough).

Just one point, and it's not really to do with the art as such, but I think the idea is 20 years after a nuclear war, so it's possible that the population have some high-tech stuff left over. The sketches so far look a little too low-tech for me - what I'll thinking of is more touches like the first guys gas-mask. Overall though, excellent!

Title: Re: Concept art

Folks, I'm giving the female character a try in xsi. I hope I'll be able to show something in a few days. See you.

Sirren. Let me know if there's anything I can do to help. I'll have some more work soon.

Title: Re: Concept art
Post by: Sirren on April 25, 2009, 11:01:42 PM
Hello JustinOperable. Well, I don't think you can help me further with this character. As you can see I'm roughing out forms. This character IS going to have a gown. The point is I haven't a clear idea about how I'm going to rig it, I never did it before. I think I could try a quick and dirty cloth simulation, so I think  the gown will be a single piece mesh, probably either a cloth patchwork or a simple cow hide. The legs geometry will be used as a base for a sort of conforming cloth.
See you and have a nice Sunday.

EDIT: VERY handy this kind of image attachement  ;D

EDIT part II: Still unfinished, some crude texturing going on. Comments and critiques are welcome.
See you

Title: Re: Concept art

New model and textures. I'm trying to establish a base mes and blah blah. As soon as I'm done with this one I'll give a try to all the three riders. The small shot is there just to give a rough idea about what players will see. No lighting, no real ortho view, full AA on...

Title: Re: Concept art
Post by: Kukkakaali on May 02, 2009, 05:28:14 AM
Dont forget to draw buildings and terrain also, althougt its often more interesting than the same old character models.

Title: Re: Concept art
Post by: Sirren on May 03, 2009, 02:06:26 PM
The female one is done. Here's a raider. Don't know what the protunding spikes in JustinOperable concept were meant to be, so the thing is a work in progress. The small shot is just to give an idea as usual. Garments colours are easy to change. C&C welcome, I need to know if I'm in the right direction or a road correction is to be made.

Title: Re: Concept art
Post by: egalor on May 04, 2009, 08:47:44 AM
Generally, looks nice. Although I would add some more detail to the raider's coat (looks too empty). And those spikes don't look good on the smaller model (more like a mutated arm).

Title: Re: Concept art
Post by: Sirren on May 04, 2009, 01:03:27 PM
I think you're right, probably the claw (and pauldron) should be huger. Since at least a part of the clothing should be hand made - and customized -  I was thinking about adding a sort of colourful embroidery to many characters garments. The point is: what is the player actually going to see? Well, time to experiment. See you.

Edit: Lighting setup isn't ready yet, but this guy was cut to exact size...

Title: Re: Concept art
Post by: egalor on May 05, 2009, 01:56:11 PM
Looks much better! Good job.

Comments:

- add some embroidery, dirt stains, scratches, folds to the winter coat - to make it look more naturally worn (and less plastic);
- left shoulder pauldron should be considerably darker and scratched;
- try to put skiing glasses on his head.

Title: Re: Concept art
Post by: Sirren on May 05, 2009, 02:30:43 PM
I completely agree with you about the fact that this sprite is too clean..
Two points I must work on:
A) Character props: more belts, pouches, maybe a back pack. And some details like the pouldron should be huger.
B) Textures: I hoped to be able to make with it procedural textures. Apparently I'll have to hand paint clothings folders, which isn't much fun.
Probably this character textures are too bright as well, but I'm still working on the lighting setup.

Important:
All .PNGs files made with xsi seem to brighten a lot when zoomed in - I'm talking about final renders, not the black/gray background previews I posted up to now. Do you get this same result too when clicking on the last sprite I posted? Since FIFE allows the player to zoom in this could pose a problem.

Title: Re: Concept art
Post by: mvBarracuda on May 05, 2009, 02:43:48 PM
It's likely that we won't allow zooming in, at least not beyond 1:1 zoom scale. That's how Unknown Horizons (a FIFE-based strategy game in the making) handles it: they allow zooming out and you can zoom in again, but not beyond 1:1 zoom scale. This way you can avoid ugly pixels.

Shameless bump  ;D
Another w.i.p. for you. Well, it seems I have more spare time than it's healthy for me...
This time it's JustinOperable's female rider. The gal still needs a scarf and her ponytail, then I'll start texturing.
See you.

Title: Re: Concept art
Post by: Zimble on May 07, 2009, 09:39:27 AM
Oh, nice. Wish I could model such organic stuff... no wait... im more the cube guy ;)

Is there already a decision made how clothes and items on the char can be handled (by fife)?
I ask because this poor women is grown together with her bagpack  ;)

Title: Re: Concept art
Post by: Sirren on May 07, 2009, 12:29:40 PM
Well, the backpack thingie happens becouse shoulder straps go through the jacket fur collar. I didn't edit it becouse I don't know if I'm keeping it in the end model.
Engine handling hasn't been decided yet.
We don't know yet how many sprites (garments or armour) playing character will have. Temperature will be extremely important in game, so probably PC/NPCs look will be dictated by clothing and not by armour.. Well, just my guess..
Other than that if we're going to have layered sprites then we'll have customizable look à la Diablo. If we're going to have single layer sprites than you'll have a standard look à la Fallout/Jagged Alliance. This hasn't been decided yet, I feel the second option is more probable. Please ask to the general design departement, I know this has been discussed.

Title: Re: Concept art
Post by: Sirren on May 07, 2009, 09:38:08 PM
Another shameless bump.. And another finished model. I thought this was going to fast and easy becouse I had a base model. I had to rework the model. My lighting set up isn't ready yet, so these are just glimpses of what's coming.
I know we're supposed to be able to work without much support/critiques.. I'm trying to establish a style, so to speack.
Enjoy.

Title: Re: Concept art
Post by: maximinus on May 08, 2009, 03:14:04 AM
She's almost good to go. As you say, the lighting set-up needs some work, she looks a bit shiny and clean.

Title: Re: Concept art
Post by: Sirren on May 08, 2009, 11:54:37 AM
I do agree with you. I tinkered with ambient occlusion, tweacked a couple of textures and now she looks better.
The main difficulty with my lighting setup lies in shadow angle. I couldn't adapt Blender settings it to XSI up to now (light tipes are different by the way), and shadow angle always was my nemesis..

Title: Re: Concept art
Post by: mvBarracuda on May 08, 2009, 01:57:59 PM
Looks great to me Sirren :-) Just one question: why does she wear two different kind of boots?

EDIT: concerning Zimble's question about clothes: ATM FIFE does NOT support layered rendering of moving objects. So an (N)PC would have to be rendered with everything that (s)he should carry ingame: armor, weapons, backpacks, etc.

Title: Re: Concept art
Post by: maximinus on May 08, 2009, 03:40:53 PM

Title: Re: Concept art

Old thread to be bumped, I know, but I need some help (and it could be good for PARPG).

To cut a long story short, I have a met a Chinese 3D animator who is also a Fallout fan. He's offered to rig and animate the main PC character for us, but he needs the obj file, or whatever you need. He currently works with Maya 3d and his work (at least, what of seen of the animations) is good.

So is there any chance of getting the original 3d files from anyone? It seems that Sirren hasn't been around for a while...

Title: Re: Concept art

I've mailed Sirren yesterday and pointed him to the graphics department roll call thread. Hopefully he let's us know about his current whereabouts soon.

Title: Re: Concept art

Still here, alive and kicking. I haven't touched CG for a whole month, but I'm checking the forums regularly. In short: i'm operational again.

Title: Re: Concept art
Post by: maximinus on July 02, 2009, 03:16:52 PM
Hi Sirren!

What format is the raider in? My Chinese friend uses MAYA, if thats any help, an obj is just fine. But he's not too sure what format to pass it back in (he doesn't know blender at all).

Title: Re: Concept art
Post by: Sirren on July 02, 2009, 04:00:07 PM
I partially remade the male raider to make it look less like a "fantasy" character. I can export it to max, maya and obj. Fbx causes problems.

Title: Re: Concept art
Post by: maximinus on July 02, 2009, 04:28:30 PM
Well, he was happy with obj format. Can you mail it to me so he can get to work on it?

Title: Re: Concept art
Post by: mvBarracuda on July 02, 2009, 05:37:42 PM
Actually we should consider putting all these models into SVN, shouldn't we? Otherwhise all work is easily lost; I'm just thinking about which format to use for the SVN version. Any suggestions by the others?

Title: Re: Concept art
Post by: maximinus on July 02, 2009, 05:48:41 PM
Whatever the original artist used would be a good starting point (not the best, but a start)

Title: Re: Concept art
Post by: mvBarracuda on July 02, 2009, 06:22:53 PM
Yep, think so as well. The original idea was to use the assets software for this purpose but I still haven't had the time to look into it in detail yet. So simply putting them into SVN for now (trunk/source/models maybe?) should be the best option.

Title: Re: Concept art
Post by: Sirren on July 04, 2009, 07:12:37 PM
O.K, I uploaded 5 models with textures. They are the valmet rifle, the woman in green with the fur gown, the male and female raiders currently used in game and the wolf. Models are .objs and textures are .pngs. The there are a few presets materials, but only for details. Heads are xsi presets, but I have a commercial version.
I said I was not going to do more weapons but here's a wip: the steyr 69 sub machine gun.
Apart from this I really, really need more concept arts for characters.. Pleeeeaaase...

1. A farmer, heh - "Get off my land !"

3. A possible traveller or scoundrel

They have a lot of detail.

But this is cool, because I am a big fan of detail. You know, those sketch arts help imagination too, they are not limited by modelling tools (the more and more complex the surface gets, and the less perfect and more "real" living beings become)

Hey Gaspard how do you call that way to draw?

And you mentioned Justin something... is your style similar to his style?

I do remember the picture of a knight... if you looked at the knight from far away he looked perfect

if you came closer you would notice that his image is actually... that style you used for the portraits (and I think it was from justin)... lemme try to find the pic i mean... here

oh don't you worry about me taking anything too serious :P and I've got a sense of humour on me myself, I like to think.

Hey, shevy. Justin Sweet is the guy I look up to, also Jon Foster, very much actually. There are others, too.
As I'm doing this PARPG art stuff out of my free time and that's very little time indeed, when I've got 6 hours of drawing and 3 hours or painting a day + food and the rest, then I tend to get influenced by people I look up to more than I'd like to.

Though I have to say that the only thing that's comparable in the least with anyone is the black and white "Alone" piece here, which still is un-comparable to Mr. Sweets sweet pieces of art ! pun intended !
